Spring Means Flowers

Hope you all are having a wonderful New Year. We have celebrated a New Year, 2010, Valentine's Day and now we move into the Spring of the year. When I think of Spring I naturally think of Spring flowers and arrangements. Arrangements make a wonderful gift for any season or reason!

Flowers  are really simple to arrange and bring so much joy. Whether you are saying, "I'm sorry", "I love you", or "I miss you" they can bring sunshine and light to a sad or rainy day. What a "perk up" for a sick friend,  just to say "thank you for a great job", or  "I just appreciate you."

This month I'm going to spend a little time talking about arrangements and some problems that some have putting them together at times. I hope I can offer a few solutions that will be helpful on your next arrangement.

Q. I have trouble making my arrangements look balanced with color and flowers. The front side looks great but the back side looks awful----I want it to look good at all angles. Any solutions?

A. Try using a mirror in front of the arrangement. This way you can see the angles and all sides as you turn it around.

Q. I have a large mouthed vase I often use for flowers. How do I keep them from falling to one side and keeping the arrangement organized?

A.  There are actually a couple of solutions to this problem. You might try some clear tape and criss-cross it on the top. This way you could place the stems in between the squares. Another solutions is to purchase criss-cross plastic circles from a craft store or use a foam cut into a circle and secure it to the top. Punch holes in the foam to secure the stems for arrangement.

Q. The stems of my floral are sometimes too short in the arrangement. What can I do?

A. If you have some marbles laying around (or pebbles can be used) to add height in the low spots in the bottom of the vase. This can also make an eye-catching arrangement if it is done in a clear glass vase.

Q. My flowers are sometimes droopy....any suggestions on making them look straight in a vase?

A. A great solution is a large plastic drinking straw. Just pull the stem through the straw. You can even use green floral tape to cover the straw for a more realistic look.

HELPFUL TIPS!

Did you know you could dye certain flowers? This works well on white daisies. Use a 1/2 cup of water with food coloring of your choice and place stem in solution for several hours. The colors come out very nice. The solution is also reusable! This also works well for artificial flowers that have faded. Just dip them in food coloring solution for a refreshed look!

Do you like the idea of a "forever arrangement?" You can actually use artificaial and real flowers in an arrangement to make it look more realistic and last longer. This is also cost saving on replacement of real flowers. Just pluck the real flowers out when they begin to die and replace with fresh. You will use less flowers but your arrangement will last forever. Try some of the more natural accents in your arrangement (dry flowers) as well.

Whatever the occasion or arrangement, I know, your florals will be absolutely gorgeous and deeply appreciated when given as a gift. So next time you want to give something a little unique and special try a floral arrangement. You'll have a lot of fun creating as well as giving. Happy Spring and Happy Arranging!
